The Society for Human Resource Management and Career conducted a Workplace Romance survey in 2006 and found that only 9 percent of the HR professionals surveyed indicated that dating among employees was prohibited in their organizations.More than 70 percent did not have formal written or verbal policies dealing with romantic relationships.Manager/employee dating, in particular, may be prohibited by policy so it is always a good idea to check with the HR department or take a look at the policy handbook to see what rules your company has. In 2008, more than 13,867 sexual harassment claims were filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Employers may address the potential exposure resulting from employee dating by either adopting a policy prohibiting dating or by adopting a policy that permits employee dating, but requires disclosure of such relationship.

If a relationship exists, the employer should require the employees notify management.

It is important to create spaces, such as school communities, where the behavioral norms are not tolerant of abuse in dating relationships.

The message must be clear that treating people in abusive ways will not be accepted, and policies must enforce this message to keep students safe.

After all, the workplace is where most people spend the majority of their waking hours.

But, when those co-workers are in a manager/subordinate relationship, the problems can be even more pronounced.

If other employees are aware of such relationships, employees may claim that the subordinate employee received preferential treatment.

Additionally, if the relationship ends, one of the employees may claim the relationship was not consensual, that she was sexually harassed, or that she was retaliated against if she receives a poor performance review from her former paramour.

Not all relationships last forever, of course, but if and when the relationship between manager and subordinate ends, the work relationship may need to continue.
